tears

listen

in spare moments, poetry

feathered aching
honey, milk and
a life perfumed with salt water
dipping into cold,
the waves kiss the shore
 the taste of raspberries
sunsets and sunrises
laughter
stories
a campfire
long, stretched nights
emotion that softly tears

fully alive

7 STEPS TO A HAPPIER DAY

the be project, v 5 - BE HAPPY

a compilation of photos from recently -

1. savour
2. searching
3. film & feet
4. a best friend & the ocean
5. summer, please
6. an exciting shoot for beloved magazine
7. fresh air, warm skin

I've been savouring and breathing in life's simple joys - swimming in the ocean, sitting and thinking and praying, purposefully reading and studying God's word daily, doing yoga before bed, making delicious smoothies, laughing and eating and sharing with friends. The university semester begins in a few days and March will be full with weddings to photograph and assignments to complete but I've been physically, mentally and spiritually gearing up.

Are you overwhelmed by life's tasks?  Here's a little list of things to do which will brighten your day and plant a spark of joy in your soul.

Treat yourself

Lunch at your favourite restaurant, a good book, an afternoon at the ocean, long, deep conversations, a favourite smoothie or drink, a delicious pizza, laughter with friends, a prayer and Bible reading session, trying something new, organising, dreaming, planning, writing: What is it that gets you excited about life?  Indulge in life's simplest pleasures.  Note what you love, do what you love, follow what you love.

Smile.

Smile, right now.  Grin!  Laugh!  Fake it till you make it.  Seriously, set your timer for 7 minutes and smile the entire time.  Note how your mindset changes as you smile: Smiling releases endorphins and serotonin - two amazing feel-good hormones.

Stay grateful.
Look around you - there are countless blessings which God has showered on you and your life.  Write or speak out loud a long list of the things God has blessed you with.  Praise Him!

Switch your mindset.

We're born with 50% of our 'happiness', only about 10% of our happiness is environmental and 40% of our happiness is mindset-based (more here!).   Think positively, wash away thoughts of 'I can't do this' to 'I'm so excited to do this; I can and will complete this task'.

Deep breaths.  Perspective.  Absorb.

Our lives are fleeting and short; ultimately, we don't have yesterday or tomorrow - all we have for certain is today (and the hope of eternity!).  Breathe in this moment.  Let your body, mind and soul become so immersed in what it means to be alive now.  Feel your surroundings.  What can you hear? Smell?  Taste?  See?  Absorb and savour the strange and wonderful beauty of life.

Compliment someone.  Talk to a stranger.  Tell someone you love them.

One of the best ways to boost your happiness is to boost someone else's happiness.  Tell someone how wonderful they look today, say 'Hello!' and give a warm smile to a stranger, tell or text a friend letting them know you're thinking of them and love them.

Journal, write, pray, speak

Write your thoughts, feelings.  Speak them!  Pray over them!  Discuss your thoughts with a close friend or family member.  Releasing and sharing our feelings does wonders to spark a deep and inner sense of joy.

What do you do that plants a seed of joy in you heart?  I'd love to know! xx

FRESH

1. ocean.
2. wonder.
3. to understand.

Days like these, when sunshine drips like honey through the window; the smoothie blender whirrs in the morning; warm, deep winds rush through the hallway; laugher resounds; pillars of light creep into a small white room; we cling to fresh, white sheets at night; a candle flickers as we drift off to sleep.  Life is slow and simple; it is honest and good.  How privileged and blessed we are.

Life rushes past and we try to hold our breaths, try to sip in the richness of now, embrace summertime and wind and sea salt and laughter.  We're tangled in between our own failures and worries - loosen them, let them slip out of our grasp.  Perhaps, after all, they do not belong to our souls.

To find happiness in quiet, unexpected moments or objects - flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, a good breakfast.  Live simply and wholly.

The rest of January is busy.  I'm looking forward to days packed with photo sessions and the thrill of deadlines (a paradox of sorts, because simultaneously I hate deadlines).

In other news!  I'm not (really) doing New Year's Resolutions; I'm forming and utilising what I like to think of as New Day's Resolutions.  Here's a short run-down:

As soon as you wake up every morning, write 5 things you would like to accomplish (big or small - perhaps even ranging from 'make curry' to 'finally publish that big article'. Then continue in your daily pursuits and keep in mind accomplishing those tasks. Push the uncompleted ones to another day. Always accomplish three or more tasks.

Accomplish! Fight! Dream! Pursue!

And have a lovely day. xx

LATELY

Know that there will be seasons where everything appears to be going wrong, where everything seems dry and dull and dusty like a dessert.  But also know that there will be times of inspiration, of heart-pounding thrill and ecstasy and emotions you've only ever longed to experience - an ocean, gurgling and rushing, flowing and pushing itself into every surface of your soul.

Create for creation's sake, not for other's sake.  I've found myself slowly pulling away from my 'mundane', home, baking, artistic floral, style, nature shots and I find myself only taking out my camera when I have a wedding, family, or engagement session to photograph.  Without a trace of doubt - I love and adore family, weddings, engagements.  Photographing people, and the love and stories and emotions they hold - is the one thing I ever want to do.  And yet, how did my love for this start?  Draw yourself back to the basics.  Bring yourself home.  You know where you started: always take yourself to your roots, your artistic heritage.

Anyhow!  A few shots from last month... I'm tempted to elaborate on how wonderful and fast this wedding season is going by, how many beautiful weddings I've had the privilege to photograph. I'll let a few upcoming posts give you a snippet into that.  It's here, on this blog, where my love for photography blossomed.  Here, I'll share my thoughts and aspirations openly.

I'm also planning a few more personal posts and on opening up my heart a little more here.

But most of all, I would love to know what you think! Please comment below and let me know what your favourite posts that I do are!  Personal, baking, photography, tips and hints, life/lately posts?  What do you love?

All my love! Acacia xx

In about two and a bit year's time I will be twenty-one, and this is a letter for myself to re-read then. I encourage you to jot down a note or letter to yourself.  Refresh and invigorate your memory and reacall what it was like to be you years ago.

Dear Acacia

It is a 11:24pm and you are sitting on your bed, legs criss crossed, listing to the clock's pulse and waves of music flood your mind.  The lamp in the corner of the room is dimmed and warm.  You are 18, which most say is 'very young' yet they say 18 is naive and unexperienced and yet they say 18 is responsibility and adulthood.

This past year has been one of milestones and ventures you struggled to believe were happening - you've published in magazine distributed across America.  You have shot handfuls of weddings on your own and with other photographers and photographed countless families.  You started your business, made a wise and discerning decision to drop university and study online and build your business.

Life is rushed and flurried; sometimes you go to bed at 2am because you are lost in the wonder and joy, tangled in the passion for your work.  You wake up, sometimes having had 6 hours of sleep and continue to create, to edit, to seek work and clients day after day.  You invest in marketing, you talk endlessly about photography ventures and journeys to mum.

A year ago, when you were 17, you worried about your physical appearance and constantly thought about what others perceptions of you were.  Now you are merely concerned about your business, lost in a world of entrepreneurship and success.  What is success?  Success is not more weddings, a larger following, likes, or affirmation from others. Success is knowing God, understanding joy and hardship as equal and necessary entities.  Success is knowing that this life is but a whisper, a fleeting breath, a nanosecond compared to what is to come.  Know this.  Know that this life is not all there is.  There is more (so much more).  He has a plan - destined, mapped, meticulously designed.  Trust in Him, abide in Him, believe in Him.

You were born into a family of artists, painters, musicians - your grandfather an exceptionally talented photographer.  Even though you never admit it (as far as I'm aware, you honestly never have), you are artistic and talented - a seeker and capturer of beauty and emotion.  Keep that in mind.

Above all: Let Him build in you so that you can build in others.  Close the laptop screen and refocus.  Comparison is the thief of joy and ultimately you have an audience of one - Jesus.   Know that this moment matters.

Shhh.

Close your eyes and dream.  Picture life in two year's time from now.

Your eyes are tired now, drooping, you are about to take a shower and fall asleep with a sound mind.

Acacia, you are 18 and wise and strangely naive and passionate and eager.  You are going far and wide.  Listen, breathe, awaken.

xo

FALLING, SLOWLY THEN ALL AT ONCE

images number 1 and 6 second shot with whitewall photography

Written 5 weeks ago...

The flu has hit our home hard and swiftly.  My younger three brothers, two younger sisters and my mum fell ill with a fever for five days.  I ran out of the house, escaped with my laptop, grabbed by bike pedalled and took the wrong road.  It was damp and grey outside.  A dark cloud wrapped over the sky like a blanket and cars rushed past, warm and heated inside.  The wind stung my ears, clapping at my helmet and my body.  I pedalled faster, let gravity take her pull and swing me loose and free down the hill - exuberance, energy, vitality - then uphill again.  Pushing, yearning, striving.  I pushed my bike closely against a poll and locked it with a small purple lock.  And ran.  I almost stumbled into the bus, swiped my card, and in time, made it to the city for a client meeting.  The bride and I had a wonderful conversation and I am beyond ecstatic to shoot her wedding.  Afterward,  I talked with several store owners.  I wandered into different shops.  I chatted with a sales lady at Pressed Juices, had a lovely conversation and was offered some vegan cake. I smiled and laughed, later on only to realise that I had spinach stuck in my teeth.  (Cue slow clapping.)

Now.

Now I type away in my room.  I've quarantined myself from the sickness spreading like a fire outside my room.  I have not yet been sick, and I will not be sick.  It is still and cold but bright and I am alight with vitality and passion, my mind is alight.  My spirit is on fire.

Falling, falling, and falling slowly.  Then all at once.  It is a beautiful feeling, to be loose and free and to let gravity take her pull - whether it is on a bike or in life.  I'm pushing and pedalling harder than ever, even though sometimes I fall short - take the wrong paths, put deadlines to the side.  I am striving.  The spark -- the desire -- to improve, to pull myself higher, to fall closer to God, to push through thick (and thin), it lurks.  And that's all that matters.

"Then the loudest silence of all.  The realising that some chapters don't have endings.  Sometimes they just stop in the middle of a sentence and it's up to me to turn the page" (Nirrimi - on her blog 'fire and joy')

Life doesn't often flow the way we want it to and that's 120% okay.  If only we would let gravity, let God, let life take its pull, to ease into the difficulties of life - to prevent us running from them.   Slip down the slide of life, don't try to hold back.  There will be lows; but after dreadful lows, the sun will slip into the sky accompanied by exhilarating heights.

How swiftly life breathes, how fast her heartbeat.

5 weeks later...

After a flurry of session inquires and meetings with brides and grooms I gasped, praised God, sank into what seemed like a perpetual state of blissful ease, unbridled joy.

My passion is morphing into my life, my work, my dreams.  It seeps into almost every thought and creating art, documenting life and light and stories and human beings is what I desire to do for the rest of my life.  Life is rich with meaning and vitality, alight with stories and emotions and it is my hope to display at least a snippet of that through photographs.

2 weeks later (now)...

In an attempt to be brutally honest and vulnerable with the world, my clients and you, I am sharing this post.

I've lived across four countries, with 5 younger siblings and two wonderful parents, I've moved eleven times, have been homeschooled up until grade 12, attended university for one year then dropped out.  I spent my days (and still DO spend my days) wondering what on earth I was and am going to do with my life.  Could my passion -- my passion for capturing love and humans through photographs morph into a business?  That is what I want to explore on my blog.  I want to share me.  100% unbridled vulnerability.

Let's get started.

All my love, Acacia xx

THESE DAYS

I wish I could find the perfect words to encapsulate how I feel - tangled and torn between the past, present and future, wishing for sun on my back and the smell and feel of the ocean, for travel, for good, hard work - wishing for escape and that everything would miraculously fall into place.  It never does, it never will.  Progress takes time; once I learn to accept time and its simple, slow moments and am diligent in pursuing life in all its difficulties and goodness I will progress and move forward.

: inspired by last year's post  :

cooking : and planning tomorrow's lunch
drinking : peppermint and ginger tea to warm my shivering body up

playing : with the idea of moving to Hawaii... or San Fransisco.
deciding : whether or not my thoughts are worth sharing with the world.
wishing : summer would surface, alongside sweaty runs, bonfires, laughter, salt in my hair, sand in between toes.
enjoying : candle light and strangely cool and swift air creeping through my window
waiting : for a swim in clear, warm water
liking : organising, decluttering every part of my room
wondering : what my Small Business Management course will be like
loving : delivering beautiful photos to photography clients

marvelling : at neatly-stacked books and spring's symphony (birds and fresh-mown grass and blossoms and a delicious heart ache)
needing : an exotic escape.
smelling : tree-scented candles and cool, fresh air
wearing : Gap bell-bottom jeans and a grey knit turtle neck sweater
noticing : that I thrive spending time with (myself) & that I'm never in dire need of entertainment - books, tea, photos and tidying have my heart.
thinking : that I should get up, take a shower, brush my teeth, stretch, exercise and get. into. bed.
sorting : photos, photos, photos
buying : a necklace - something pretty to spice up my outfits

looking : at clothes which need to be folded and put away, my macbook air, fingers tapping, an empty tea cup.

What have you been up to? I'd love to know. :) xx

SPRING & A NEW DESIGN

"We walked through a high hallway into a bright rosy-coloured space, fragilely bound into the house by French windows at either end.  The windows were ajar and gleaming white against the fresh grass outside that seemed to grow a little way into the house.  A breeze blew through the room, blew curtains in at one end and out the other like pale flags, twisting them up toward the frosted wedding-cake of the ceiling, and then rippled over the wine-coloured rug making a shadow on it as the wind does on the sea"  - The Great Gatsby

I am in eager anticipation for the day I throw open my window, warm air tumbling in and pushing at the curtains - spring gracefully falling into my bedroom with pools of sunlight gathering and caressing the ground, a bird singing, and the scent of fresh laundry drying.  I despise wintertime, and although 'the grass always seems greener from the other side', inevitably, spring always is always greener and more resplendent than winter.  Today I welcome spring into this little space that you and I share, my blog: Let's hold her tight and push her into photographs and pretend she is here even though bitter winds bite outside.

xx Acacia

PS I recently designed my blog! This design would not be possible without the template I bought from MangoBlogs.  It is not completely finished but I would love to hear what you think of it. :)

Craving simplicity

1. the way the light falls into my bedroom
2. at the kitchen sink
3. portrait of a lemon
4. yellow & film
5. dancing forever - from a photo session today
6. drips of colour

And yet again, I hit the break in the middle of the highway - seat belt locking fast and firm and my car, my life, my mind jolting to a stop.  I pull open my laptop screen and browse, browse, browse - in a constant flux of procrastination, my eyes search for more and yet all I want is less, to simplify, to declutter, to empty.  But I crave more?  I crave the ability to take better photos?  I crave collaborations?  I crave success.  When, oh when, I ask myself will I learn that the journey is the destination - that, except heaven, there is no glimmering, glistening, perfect life.   To stop comparing and start doing -- that is the ultimate destination.  To live simply and wholly and breathe today's air as if it were our last breath on earth.

Forever craving simplicity, normalcy and ease and yet?  I have it here.  Right now.  I own my life (and you own yours) and the choice is ours.  Let go.  Release.  Push away the blogs, books and social media accounts that tell you 'less is more' because without them is less.  Seek less, seek Him.

Have you been craving simplicity and ease amidst a storm?
